Best ski resorts with short transfer times

If you want to spend less time travelling and more time skiing, choosing a resort with a short airport transfer can make a significant difference. This is particularly useful for a short ski break, but it can also make arrival and departure days easier on a week-long holiday.

Which ski resorts have the shortest airport transfer times? Mayrhofen in Austria is approximately 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes from Innsbruck Airport, while Les Carroz and Samoëns in France are around 1 hour 15 minutes from Geneva. Morzine, La Clusaz, Sauze d'Oulx and Bardonecchia are also convenient options, with estimated transfers of 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes.

Other popular choices include Chamonix, Montgenèvre, St Anton and Courmayeur, all approximately 1 hour 30 minutes from their nearest practical airports. The best option also depends on how easily you can reach the slopes once you arrive.

Transfer times are approximate and may vary depending on traffic, weather, road conditions, airport waiting times and the type of transfer you book.

Top 20 ski resorts with the short transfer times

A short transfer is most valuable when it is combined with easy access to the skiing once you arrive. The resorts below therefore aren't ranked purely by minutes from the airport. We also consider how efficiently you can settle into the resort and get onto the mountain.

1. Les Carroz, France

Nearest airport: Geneva
Approx. transfer time: 1 hr 15 mins
Best for: Families, intermediates and easy access to the Grand Massif

Les Carroz is one of Skiworld's strongest options if keeping the airport transfer short is a priority. Geneva is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes away, putting the resort among the most accessible in the Skiworld programme. The advantage is that the short journey does not mean sacrificing the size of the ski area. Les Carroz is part of the Grand Massif, giving access to 265km of pistes shared with Flaine, Samoëns, Morillon and Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval. The Kédeuze gondola provides access from the village into the wider ski area.  For families and intermediates in particular, this combination of a relatively quick journey from Geneva, a traditional village and access to a large linked ski area makes Les Carroz one of the most practical short transfer ski resorts in France.

2. Samoëns, France

Nearest airport: Geneva
Approx. transfer time: 1 hr 15 mins
Best for: Families, intermediates and a traditional Alpine village

Samoëns is another Grand Massif resort with excellent access from Geneva Airport. With an approximate transfer time of 1 hour 15 minutes, it makes it particularly attractive when you don't want a long road journey after your flight. Samoëns differs from a purpose built ski resort because the historic village sits below the main skiing. The access gondola is slightly outside the village centre and takes skiers up to the main slopes and the wider Grand Massif. That makes the resort a good choice if you want a traditional village as well as a short transfer and extensive skiing. The trade off is that the village itself is not as immediately slope side as a purpose built resort such as Flaine, so the airport transfer is only part of the overall journey from arrival to skiing.

3. Chamonix, France

Nearest airport: Geneva
Approx. transfer time: 1 hr 30 mins
Best for: Experienced skiers, groups and shorter trips with plenty to do off the slopes

Chamonix combines a relatively short transfer from Geneva with one of the most famous mountain destinations in the Alps. With an approximate Geneva transfer time of 1 hour 30 minutes, its appeal for a shorter trip goes beyond the transfer. Chamonix is a lively year round town with a large choice of restaurants, bars and shops, so there is plenty within easy reach when you are not skiing. The main trade off is the layout of the ski area. Chamonix's principal ski sectors are spread along the valley rather than forming one completely interconnected network, and road or bus transport is generally needed to move between them. That means Chamonix has a short airport transfer, but it is not necessarily the most friction free option for skiers whose main objective is to maximise piste time.

4. Montgenèvre, France

Nearest airport: Turin
Approx. transfer time: 1 hr 30 mins
Best for: Families, beginners and convenient access to the slopes

Montgenèvre is one of the strongest short transfer options outside the resorts served by Geneva. The resort sits at around 1,850m on the French/Italian border and provides access to the cross border Milky Way ski area. Much of Montgenèvre's local terrain is particularly well suited to beginner and intermediate skiers, as well as for families with ski in/ski out accommodation.

5. St Anton, Austria

Nearest airport: Innsbruck
Approx. transfer time: 1 hr 30 mins
Best for: Intermediate and advanced skiers, groups and après-ski

St Anton is Skiworld's strongest Austrian option for a short airport transfer. Innsbruck is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes away, giving you relatively quick access to one of Austria's largest and best known ski areas. Once in resort, the main lifts provide access to the wider Ski Arlberg area, with 305km of pistes linking St Anton with resorts including St Christoph, Lech and Zürs. Accommodation close to the Galzigbahn, Rendlbahn or Nassereinbahn can make the transition from arriving in resort to getting onto the mountain particularly straightforward. St Anton works especially well for experienced skiers who want to fit a lot into a shorter trip. The extensive skiing and lively après-ski mean there is plenty to do without changing resort, although beginners may find its terrain more demanding than some of the other short transfer options in this guide.

6. Flaine, France

Nearest airport: Geneva
Approx. transfer time: 1 hr 45 mins
Best for: Families, intermediates and ski in/ski out convenience

Flaine is approximately 1 hour 45 minutes from Geneva Airport and has another advantage when time is limited: the resort was purpose built around convenient access to the slopes. Much of the accommodation is ski in/ski out or close to the lifts, and Flaine provides direct access to the 265km Grand Massif ski area. This can make the overall journey from airport arrival to skiing particularly efficient, even though its road transfer is longer than the journey to Les Carroz or Samoëns. Flaine is therefore a good example of why transfer time should not be considered in isolation. For a short ski break, spending an extra 30 minutes on the airport transfer may be worthwhile if you can then stay close to the pistes and minimise travelling around once you are in resort.

7. Avoriaz, France

Nearest airport: Geneva
Approx. transfer time: 2 hrs
Best for: Families, groups and ski in/ski out convenience

Avoriaz sits at the upper end of what we would consider a short transfer resort in this guide, with an approximate transfer time of 2 hours from Geneva Airport. What makes Avoriaz particularly efficient once you arrive is its ski in/ski out design. The resort is car free and the accommodation offered by Skiworld is positioned for direct or very convenient access to the slopes. Avoriaz also sits within the Portes du Soleil, providing access to an extensive cross border ski area without needing to change resort.  For a 3-4 night trip, that can compensate for the longer airport transfer. Once you are settled in Avoriaz, relatively little time needs to be spent travelling between your accommodation and the skiing.

8. Courmayeur, Italy

Nearest airport: Turin
Approx. transfer time: 1 hr 30 mins
Alternative airport: Geneva (approx 2 hrs)
Best for: Short breaks combining skiing, restaurants and a lively mountain town

Courmayeur is another strong short transfer option outside France. Turin is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes away, while Geneva is around 2 hours away and can also be a practical gateway depending on your flights and holiday arrangements. The ski area is smaller than the Grand Massif, Portes du Soleil or Ski Arlberg, but that is not necessarily a disadvantage on a shorter trip. Courmayeur offers around 100km of skiing alongside a compact, lively town known for its restaurants, bars and traditional Italian atmosphere. That combination can work particularly well when you only have a few days and want more than skiing alone. Rather than trying to cover an enormous ski domain, you can combine time on the mountain with an evening in the centre without needing to travel elsewhere.

9. Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy

Nearest practical airport: Venice Marco Polo
Approx. transfer time: 2 hrs 15 mins/2 hrs 30 mins
Best for: Couples, intermediate skiers and short breaks combining skiing with Italian dining

Cortina d'Ampezzo is a useful short break option for skiers who want to combine time on the slopes with the atmosphere of a traditional Italian mountain town. Venice Marco Polo Airport is approximately 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes away by private road transfer, depending on conditions. The appeal is not simply the journey time. Cortina offers varied skiing across several sectors, with mountain restaurants, shops and a lively town centre for evenings after skiing. This makes it particularly attractive to couples and groups who want more than a purely slope focused holiday. The main consideration is that Cortina's ski areas are spread around the town rather than forming one completely interconnected network. Local transport may be needed to reach different lifts, so accommodation location matters if maximising skiing time is your priority.

10. Sauze d'Oulx, Italy

Nearest airport: Turin
Approx. transfer time: 1 hr 15 mins/1 hr 30 mins
Best for: Intermediates, groups and lively après-ski

Sauze d'Oulx is one of the most convenient Italian ski resorts to reach from Turin Airport, with a direct road transfer typically taking around 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. Its relatively short journey makes it a strong option for skiers who want to minimise travel time without choosing a small ski area. The resort forms part of the Via Lattea, or Milky Way, ski area, giving intermediate and more confident skiers access to extensive linked terrain. Sauze also has a traditional village centre with restaurants and bars, making it particularly attractive to groups looking for skiing and après-ski in the same destination. The trade off is the village layout. Some accommodation is a walk or local transport journey from the lifts, so choosing a property close to your preferred ski access point can make a noticeable difference on a shorter holiday.

11. Bardonecchia, Italy

Nearest airport: Turin
Approx. transfer time: 1 hr 15 mins/1 hr 30 mins
Best for: Families, intermediates and an accessible Italian mountain town

Bardonecchia offers a relatively short journey from Turin Airport, generally around 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes by direct road transfer. The resort combines established skiing with a year round Italian town, making it suitable for visitors who want restaurants, shops and other facilities alongside their time on the slopes. The skiing is spread across separate areas, including Campo Smith, Melezet and Jafferau. Families and intermediates can find suitable terrain, while more confident skiers have additional options across the resort's different sectors. For a short stay, the important consideration is where you are based. The ski sectors are not all linked by pistes, and moving between them can involve local transport. Bardonecchia is therefore most convenient when accommodation is close to the area you expect to ski most frequently.

12. Sestriere, Italy

Nearest airport: Turin
Approx. transfer time: 1 hr 30 mins/1 hr 45 mins
Best for: Intermediate and advanced skiers, high-altitude skiing and Via Lattea access

Sestriere is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes from Turin Airport by direct road transfer. Its high-altitude village and access to the Via Lattea ski area make it a practical choice for skiers who want extensive terrain without a particularly long airport journey. The resort has a more purpose built layout than Sauze d'Oulx, with accommodation and ski facilities concentrated around the village. Its local slopes and links towards other Via Lattea sectors offer considerable variety for intermediate and experienced skiers. Although the transfer is relatively short, the final mountain approach can be affected by winter conditions. For the most efficient short break, check whether your accommodation is close to the main lifts and whether you will need local transport to reach your preferred skiing.

13. Pila, Italy

Nearest airport: Turin
Approx. transfer time: 1 hr 45 mins/2 hrs to Pila resort
Best for: Families, beginners and intermediates wanting convenient access to the slopes

Pila is approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours from Turin Airport by road, making it another practical option for a shorter ski holiday in the Italian Alps. The resort sits above Aosta and offers a compact ski area with terrain particularly suited to beginner and intermediate skiers. One of Pila's advantages is the relationship between its accommodation and skiing. Properties in the mountain resort can offer convenient lift access, reducing the amount of travelling required once you have arrived. There is also an alternative approach via Aosta, where a gondola connects the town with the ski area in approximately 18 minutes. However, travelling to Aosta and taking the gondola is different from a direct transfer to accommodation in Pila. Families should check which arrival arrangement is included before comparing journey times.

14. Morzine, France

Nearest airport: Geneva
Approx. transfer time: 1 hr 15 mins/1 hr 30 mins
Best for: Families, groups, intermediates and traditional Alpine village atmosphere

Morzine is one of the most accessible major ski resorts from Geneva Airport, with a direct road transfer generally taking around 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. This makes it particularly attractive for shorter holidays, when spending less time travelling can mean more time enjoying the resort. The village offers access to skiing around Morzine and Les Gets, as well as connections towards the wider Portes du Soleil ski area. Its traditional Alpine atmosphere, restaurants and bars also provide plenty to enjoy after skiing. The main consideration is that Morzine sits lower than neighbouring Avoriaz, and access to different parts of the ski area can involve separate lifts or local transport. Accommodation close to the Pleney or Super Morzine lift access points can make a short stay considerably more convenient.

15. Les Houches, France

Nearest airport: Geneva
Approx. transfer time: 1 hr 15 mins/1 hr 30 mins
Best for: Families, intermediates and quieter skiing near Chamonix

Les Houches offers relatively quick access from Geneva Airport, with an approximate transfer of 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. Located at the entrance to the Chamonix Valley, it is a useful alternative for visitors who want to stay near Chamonix without necessarily choosing the busier town itself. The local ski area has a mixture of tree lined pistes and more challenging terrain, making it attractive to families and intermediate skiers. The village environment is generally quieter than central Chamonix, which can suit visitors looking for a more relaxed short break. Les Houches has its own ski area rather than a direct piste connection to Chamonix's other major ski sectors. If you want to explore the wider valley, you will need to account for local transport. For the simplest stay, choose accommodation convenient for the Les Houches lifts.

16. Isola 2000, France

Nearest airport: Nice Côte d'Azur
Approx. transfer time: 1 hr 30 mins/1 hr 45 mins
Best for: Families, beginners, intermediates and short ski breaks from Nice

Isola 2000 is an unusual short transfer option because it is reached from Nice rather than one of the main Alpine gateway airports. The journey from Nice Côte d'Azur Airport typically takes around 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes in favourable road conditions. The resort is purpose built at approximately 2,000m, with accommodation, lifts and services concentrated around the skiing. That layout can be particularly useful for families and visitors on shorter trips who want to minimise daily travel once they arrive. Its main limitation is the mountain road approach from the Tinée valley, where snow and weather can affect journey times. Isola 2000 also offers a smaller ski area than the large interconnected Alpine domains, so it is best suited to visitors who prioritise convenience over covering hundreds of kilometres of pistes.

17. La Clusaz, France

Nearest airport: Geneva
Approx. transfer time: 1 hr 15 mins/1 hr 30 mins
Best for: Families, intermediates and a traditional Savoyard village

La Clusaz is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes from Geneva Airport, making it one of the more accessible traditional ski villages in the French Alps. Its combination of Alpine character and varied skiing is particularly attractive to families and intermediate skiers. The resort offers several ski sectors, with terrain for different abilities and a village centre containing restaurants, shops and après-ski venues. For a shorter trip, this provides a good balance between time on the slopes and enjoying the resort itself. The practical consideration is that the ski sectors are spread across different parts of the mountain. Depending on where you stay and which terrain you want to ski, local transport or additional lift journeys may be necessary. Accommodation close to the lifts you plan to use can help keep the holiday straightforward.

18. Mayrhofen, Austria

Nearest airport: Innsbruck
Approx. transfer time: 1 hr/1 hr 15 mins
Best for: Intermediates, advanced skiers, groups and lively après-ski

Mayrhofen is one of the most accessible Austrian ski resorts from Innsbruck Airport, with a direct road transfer generally taking around 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes. Its position in the Zillertal Valley makes it particularly attractive for skiers who want an extensive holiday experience without a lengthy journey from the airport. The resort offers access to the Penken and Ahorn ski areas, with terrain suited to a range of abilities. Mayrhofen also has a lively village centre, with restaurants, bars and après-ski, making it a strong choice for groups and shorter ski trips. The key consideration is that the main skiing is reached by gondolas from the valley. Staying close to the Penkenbahn or Ahornbahn can make mornings easier, particularly if you want to maximise skiing time over three or four days.

19. Serre Chevalier, France

Nearest practical airport: Turin
Approx. transfer time: 1 hr 30 mins/2 hrs 30 mins
Best for: Intermediates, families and extensive skiing across traditional villages

Serre Chevalier is accessible from Turin Airport, with published transfer estimates ranging from approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes. The actual journey depends on your destination within the valley, road conditions and the route taken. The ski area extends across several villages and offers extensive terrain, including tree lined pistes and higher mountain skiing. This makes Serre Chevalier particularly attractive to intermediates and families who want a substantial ski area alongside traditional village surroundings. The main trade off is the resort's spread-out layout. Briançon, Chantemerle, Villeneuve and Le Monêtier-les-Bains are different bases, and the best choice depends on your preferred skiing and accommodation. For a short trip, confirm both the airport transfer to your specific village and the distance to the nearest suitable lifts.

20. Obergurgl, Austria

Nearest airport: Innsbruck
Approx. transfer time: 1 hr 30 mins–1 hr 45 mins
Best for: Couples, intermediates and quieter high-altitude skiing

Obergurgl offers relatively straightforward access from Innsbruck Airport, with a direct road transfer generally taking around 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes. Located high in Austria's Ötztal Valley, it is particularly appealing to visitors who prioritise convenient skiing and a quieter resort atmosphere. The Obergurgl-Hochgurgl ski area offers broad, well groomed pistes and a manageable layout compared with some of Austria's much larger interconnected ski regions. Accommodation close to the lifts can make it easy to start skiing without spending time travelling around the resort. Although Obergurgl is relatively compact, the final journey follows the Ötztal valley and mountain road, where traffic or snowfall can affect transfer times. It is a particularly good option for skiers who value straightforward daily logistics rather than extensive nightlife or an enormous ski domain.

Transfer times are approximate direct road journeys in normal conditions, not guaranteed airport to accommodation times or confirmed Skiworld coach transfer schedules. Shared transfers, airport waiting times, intermediate stops, traffic, snowfall and the location of your accommodation can increase the overall journey. For resorts with several villages or arrival points, confirm the transfer to your specific accommodation before booking.

What makes a ski resort good for a short break?

A good resort for a short ski break should minimise the time and effort between arriving at the airport and getting onto the slopes. Airport transfer time matters, but so do resort layout, accommodation location, lift access and how easily you can explore the ski area once you arrive.  When comparing resorts for a 3-4 night ski trip, consider the whole journey rather than the airport transfer alone.

1. Airport transfer time

The shorter the trip, the more significant a long transfer becomes. Resorts around 90 minutes from an airport can work particularly well because you can reach the mountains relatively quickly after landing and avoid spending a large part of your arrival and departure days on the road.  Remember that published transfer times are approximate. Traffic, weather, road conditions, airport congestion and whether you use a private or shared transfer can all affect the actual journey.

2. How quickly can you get onto the slopes?

Look beyond the point at which the transfer vehicle reaches the resort. A compact destination where your accommodation, ski hire and lifts are close together may allow you to start skiing more quickly than a resort with a slightly shorter airport transfer but a more dispersed layout.  Flaine is a good example. Its transfer from Geneva is longer than Les Carroz or Samoëns, but much of the accommodation is close to or directly on the slopes. Samoëns has a shorter airport transfer, but the main gondola is outside the historic village centre.

3. Ski in/ski out accommodation

Ski in/ski out accommodation can be particularly useful on a short trip because there is less daily travel between your accommodation and the slopes. Resorts such as Flaine and Avoriaz perform strongly here, allowing you to make efficient use of each ski day.  This does not mean ski in/ski out is essential. Accommodation close to a principal lift can provide much of the same convenience, particularly in a compact resort.

4. Easy access to the ski area

A large ski area can be attractive, but bigger is not always better for a short break. What matters is how easily you can access useful terrain without spending too much time navigating between disconnected sectors.  Les Carroz and Flaine both provide access to the linked Grand Massif, while St Anton gives experienced skiers direct access to the extensive Ski Arlberg area. Chamonix is different: its individual ski areas offer excellent terrain, but they are spread along the valley and generally require transport between sectors.

5. A resort that suits the way you ski

Finally, the most efficient resort is only useful if the skiing suits your group. Beginners may place greater value on convenient nursery slopes and ski school meeting points, while experienced skiers may prefer quick access to a larger and more challenging ski area.  Groups may also value a resort where restaurants, bars and après-ski are close to the accommodation. When you only have a few days, choosing a resort that matches what you actually want to do can be more important than saving another 15 minutes on the airport transfer.

Which short-transfer ski resort is right for you?

Mayrhofen is one of the quickest options from Innsbruck, while Les Carroz, Samoëns, Morzine and La Clusaz offer convenient access from Geneva. Sauze d'Oulx and Bardonecchia are attractive alternatives from Turin, and Flaine and Avoriaz stand out for convenient slope access once you arrive. The best choice depends on whether you prioritise the shortest airport journey, easy access to the pistes, family-friendly skiing or après-ski.

Your priority Best option Why
Shortest airport transfer Mayrhofen, Les Carroz or Samoëns Mayrhofen is approximately 1 hr/1 hr 15 mins from Innsbruck, while Les Carroz and Samoëns are around 1 hr 15 mins from Geneva.
3–4 night ski trip Flaine or Sestriere Flaine combines a manageable Geneva transfer with convenient slope access, while Sestriere offers extensive Via Lattea skiing and a relatively compact high-altitude resort base.
Beginners Montgenèvre or Pila Both offer accessible beginner terrain and practical resort layouts. Montgenèvre is approximately 1 hr 30 mins from Turin, while Pila takes around 1 hr 45 mins/2 hrs.
Families Les Carroz, Morzine or La Clusaz All three combine relatively short Geneva transfers with varied family friendly skiing and traditional Alpine village environments.
Experienced skiers St Anton or Chamonix Both are approximately 1 hr 30 mins from their respective airports and offer extensive opportunities for confident skiers, although Chamonix's main ski sectors are spread along the valley.
Ski in/ski out convenience Avoriaz or Flaine Both offer extensive slope side accommodation, helping minimise daily travel between accommodation and the skiing.
Après-ski and groups St Anton, Mayrhofen or Sauze d'Oulx All three combine relatively short airport transfers with lively après-ski, varied skiing and established resort nightlife.
Skiing and a lively mountain town Courmayeur or Bardonecchia Both offer convenient access from Turin alongside restaurants, shops and an established Italian mountain town atmosphere.
Quieter ski holidays Obergurgl or Les Houches Obergurgl offers high-altitude skiing in a relatively compact resort, while Les Houches provides a quieter alternative to staying in central Chamonix.
High-altitude skiing Sestriere, Obergurgl or Isola 2000 These resorts offer high-altitude skiing with approximate airport transfers of 1 hr 30 mins/1 hr 45 mins, depending on the destination and conditions.
Traditional Alpine villages Samoëns, La Clusaz or Morzine All three offer established village environments, restaurants and access to substantial skiing without particularly long transfers from Geneva.
Skiing, dining and Italian atmosphere Courmayeur or Cortina d'Ampezzo Courmayeur offers a shorter transfer from Turin, while Cortina is better suited to visitors willing to travel longer for its mountain restaurants, elegant town centre and Dolomites setting.

There is no single best short transfer ski resort for everyone. If minimising the airport journey is your priority, Mayrhofen, Les Carroz and Samoëns are particularly strong choices. However, the time saved once you arrive can be just as important, especially on a three or four night trip. Resorts such as Flaine and Avoriaz illustrate this distinction. Their transfers may be longer than those of some traditional Alpine villages, but convenient access to the slopes can reduce daily travel. Before booking, compare the full journey from airport to accommodation, including any shared transfer stops, and check how easily you can reach the lifts once you arrive.

Looking for a short ski break?

Once you have chosen a resort that makes good use of a shorter trip, you can explore Skiworld's short ski breaks to find bookable holidays of fewer than seven nights. Short breaks can be particularly useful when you cannot take a full week away or want to add an extra ski trip to your season. Choosing a resort with a relatively short airport transfer and convenient access to the slopes helps you make better use of the time you have.
