Snow-Camp Diary 2019/20

snow-camp charity

With all the generous donations from our guests throughout the ski season, as well as the End of Season Challenge, the Skiworld managed to raise a total of £15,000 for Snow-Camp in 2018/19! In part this is funding two £2,500 bursaries for two young people – funding their full Snow-Camp journey away from the inner-city estates to the snow-capped peaks of the Alps and culminating in a Snowsport England Level 1 Instructor qualification on completion of the programmes. Alongside the two bursaries, the other £10,000 raised in 2018 is funding 100 young people on to Snow-Camp's 2-day beginner First Tracks programmes this summer, who wouldn’t have the opportunity otherwise.

In 2019 we'll be reporting on the Snow-Camp journey, from Snow-Camp’s 2-day beginner First Tracks programmes through the summer, to those progressing through the 6-week intermediate Graduate programme early winter and finally on to the advanced 10 week Excel programme which incorporates a life-changing week in the mountains. Check back to follow the Snow-Camp journey, or subscribe to the Skiworld eNewsletter to stay updated…

August
First Tracks provides young people aged 13-21 with their first experience of snowsports. The young people are taught how to ski or snowboard by qualified instructors and Snow-Camp graduates, who have completed the full programme journey the year before.

First Tracks is both empowering for the young leaders and inspirational for the new young people. Many will know the youth instructors from their neighbourhoods and youth clubs showing them what they themselves could achieve in just one year on the programmes.

October

An awards ceremony concludes the First Tracks programme and a Snowsport England, Wales or Scotland Snow Life Award, provides a lasting record of the young people's achievements.

Moving onto the Graduate Programme is the obvious next step for young people who are keen to continue skiing or snowboarding. With a further 6 days training on the snow, the Graduate Programme gives young people the opportunity to take their skills to the next level.

December
Group classroom sessions, held before each slope lesson, expose young people to the wider world of skiing and snowboarding. Talks from those involved across the ski industry from seasonaires, snowsports media, tour operators and athletes give young people a holistic view of the industry.

January
Life-skills such as commitment, dedication and focus remain a significant part of the course as the young people  work towards their ASDAN Level 1 Certificate in Sports and Fitness, taking inspiration in-part from the guest speakers they’ve met.

February
‘Excel’ is the youth instructor course. Having completed the First Tracks and Graduate programmes, Excel supports young people who wish to pursue a career in the snowsports industry and achieve a Snowsport England, Scotland or Wales Level 1 Instructor qualification.

Ski Time!
Each year the young people have the chance to spend a week on Snow-Camp’s annual residential trip, shadowing instructors and gaining valuable mountain experience. The residential trip is an important element of broadening their horizons and highlighting the different opportunities available to them

March
Over 10 weeks, dozens of young people across the UK train to become qualified ski or snowboard instructors in Snow-Camp's Excel programme. A large part of the course is focussed on developing ski and snowboard slope-skills to instructor level at ski centres across the UK.

During Excel, the young people's slope-skills are also reflected in the classroom with key life-skills sessions including foundations of the coaching pathway, lesson planning and live teaching tasks as well as first aid and safeguarding training.

The Excel Programme culminates with an accreditiation as a Level 1 snowsports instructor and the opportunity to become a Snow-Camp Apprentice.

A staggering 91% of young people gained their Level 1 qualification in 2018!

Following Excel, a handful of young people join Snow-Camp’s award-winning Apprenticeship Programme. Apprentices gain an NVQ Level 2 in Activity Leadership, BASI Level 1, BASP Outdoor Emergency First Aid and work experience in snowsports instructing, mentoring and leadership.
