Why Skiing in January is the Right Thing To Do

Peak dates during the ski season are incredibly popular, and of course, skiing at these festive and school holiday times certainly have their benefits. But are these the only weeks of the winter worth heading to the mountains for? Oh no. Choosing a ski holiday in January is often one of the best decisions you’ll make, for several very good reasons…

Wait, Accommodation for What Price??

Quite simply, travelling in the peak weeks means you have to pay the peak prices. Those cruising to the pistes outside of these times can enjoy some seriously enticing value for money. Skiing in January embodies this value like no other month.

Skiworld has a selection of catered chalets, self-catered apartments and hotels (B&B to full board) available for you to choose from. So, whatever your needs, there’ll be a January Ski Deal for you.

  • Catered Chalets offer the complete package. Flights, transfers, accommodation, food and drinks will all be covered. Meaning all you need to worry about is which lift to head to first. Although I’m sure we can give some advice on that too.
  • Self-Catering more your style? If so, ski holidays in January will provide some truly remarkable prices. With loads of apartments, big and small, we will help you find the ultimate option for your group.
  • Ski Hotels offer the ultimate variety. You can find affordable hotels in ski resorts, but with extra facilities like wellness, spas, shops and on-site restaurants, the per night price is usually higher. However, you will generally find yourself in a prime location in resort.

Short but Sweet

Occasionally, some January departure dates are shorter than the normal seven-day getaway due to how the weekends fall over the festive period. In 2026/27 there’s an opportunity for a six-night stay from Sunday 3rd, as well as our usual three and four-night short breaks throughout the season. A uniquely lower-priced week in the mountains – the perfect tonic after a hectic Christmas and New Year.

Snow, Snow, Snow!

Not only do you get value for money from your accommodation, but January skiing also gives an abundance of fresh powder for your pound.

Happily, sat away from the early and late season thaws, January often provides some of the best and most consistent snow conditions of the season. Giving the opportunity to explore a resort’s lower-altitude villages resorts, which you may otherwise miss.

Helpfully, we have a page dedicated to keeping you up to date with the latest snow conditions, updated multiple times a week during the winter. So get this in your bookmarks now so you can see if it’s snowing where you’re going.

Fancy the Slopes to Yourself?

As well as getting a great bargain and plenty of powder, you will also find that when you ski in January you will have far fewer people to share the slopes with than during the peak periods. Those who are used to skiing at Christmas, New Year or February Half-Term will be in for a pleasant surprise.

Away from the school holiday dates, there are fewer children in resort, which means fewer ski school snakes to avoid, and if you need lessons yourself, they’ll be easier to find and book with less notice.

The slopes aren’t the only thing to get some respite from the crowds. The resort villages in general will be easier to navigate, with restaurants easier to book (and drinks easier to obtain at the bar without having to wait half an hour!).
