Some of the most useful developments are in Méribel and La Tania, while Les Menuires and Saint-Martin-de-Belleville are improving facilities for beginners. The linked Les 3 Vallées ski area is scheduled to open on 5 December 2026.

What’s new in Les 3 Vallées for Winter 2026/27?

Winter 2026/27 brings lift upgrades, piste and snowmaking improvements, new beginner facilities and easier navigation across Les 3 Vallées. Key changes include new cabins on La Tania’s gondola, further upgrades in Méribel and Méribel-Mottaret, beginner facilities in Les Menuires and Saint-Martin, and a new digital route planner for navigating the ski area.

What’s new in Les 3 Vallées for Winter 2026/27?

There is no single headline lift transforming Les 3 Vallées this winter. Instead, the 2026/27 programme focuses on making the existing ski area easier and more comfortable to use.

For skiers, that means more comfortable lift access in La Tania, better snowmaking and piste infrastructure around Méribel, easier beginner progression in the Belleville Valley and a new route planning tool designed to simplify journeys between different parts of Les 3 Vallées.

There are also more specialised developments, including the return of a chairlift serving Méribel-Mottaret’s snowpark, additional mountain safety technology in Val Thorens and a new ski touring route in Orelle.

La Tania’s gondola gets a major upgrade

One of the most noticeable changes in Courchevel for Winter 2026/27 will be at La Tania.

The La Tania gondola, which first opened in 1990 and carries almost 400,000 passengers each winter, is being refurbished rather than replaced.

Its 52 existing cabins are being replaced with new eight seat Poma cabins. The new cabins have wider doors, improved seating, panoramic windows and dedicated storage for skis and snowboards. Work also extends to the stations and technical equipment.

For skiers staying in La Tania, the significance is straightforward: this is one of the principal ways onto the mountain.

The wider doors and equipment storage should make boarding easier, while the new cabins improve comfort on the journey up. The wider refurbishment is also intended to improve the lift’s reliability.

Most importantly, the project maintains and improves an important access point from La Tania into Courchevel and the wider Les 3 Vallées network without presenting it as an entirely new lift.

What’s changing in Méribel and Méribel-Mottaret for 2026/27?

Méribel has one of the most substantial collections of practical improvements for Winter 2026/27.

They range from the final phase of a major gondola refurbishment to changes affecting beginners, freestyle skiers and the condition and usability of individual pistes.

Rhodos gondola improvements continue

The multi stage refurbishment of the Rhodos gondola is entering its final phase, with the focus now on the upper station.

Previous work covered the lower and intermediate stations, machinery and cabins. The final phase includes reorganising the platforms and façades, renovating operational areas and adding new toilets and a dedicated ski school area.

This is therefore not a new gondola for Winter 2026/27. It is the completion of a wider modernisation programme.

For skiers, the main benefit should be a better organised and more comfortable upper station, with the dedicated ski school space particularly useful for lessons and meeting arrangements.

Better snowmaking on the Truite piste

Méribel Alpina began renovating the snowmaking system on the Truite piste in spring 2026.

Truite is a green run and an important connection between Méribel-Mottaret and Méribel. That makes the work particularly relevant to beginners, families and less confident skiers using this part of the valley.

The upgraded system is designed to strengthen snow coverage while improving energy efficiency and water management.

Snowmaking does not guarantee snow conditions, but it gives the resort greater ability to prepare and maintain an important beginner-friendly connection when temperatures allow.

For holidaymakers, that operational benefit is more significant than the engineering work itself.

The Châtelet chairlift returns in Méribel-Mottaret

Freestyle skiers have a more specific change to look forward to.

The Châtelet high-speed chairlift is returning to service for Winter 2026/27. It connects the lower part of the Méribel-Mottaret snowpark directly with its upper section.

That means skiers and snowboarders using the snowpark can repeat runs without having to return to the main snow front each time.

It is a relatively specialised development, but one that should make a noticeable difference for anyone planning to spend significant time in the snowpark.

Niverolle piste improvements

The Niverolle piste on the Pas du Lac side of Méribel-Mottaret has also been reprofiled and equipped with snowmaking.

The reshaping is intended to create a smoother and more consistent descent, while the snowmaking system should give piste teams greater ability to maintain coverage throughout the season.

Together, the two changes should make Niverolle more straightforward and comfortable to ski.

New beginner facilities in Les Menuires and Saint-Martin

Some of the most useful 2026/27 developments for families and first time skiers are taking place in the Belleville Valley.

They are relatively small pieces of infrastructure compared with a gondola or chairlift, but their effect on the learning experience can be more immediate for beginners.

A new beginner area at the top of Roc 1

A new dedicated learning area is being created at the top of the Roc 1 gondola in Les Menuires.

The area includes a free-to-use magic carpet, allowing beginners to practise short runs repeatedly without having to use a conventional chairlift or drag lift.

That gives first-time skiers a controlled environment in which to practise basic turns and build confidence before progressing onto other pistes.

For families in particular, having a dedicated beginner area accessible from the Roc 1 gondola adds another practical learning option in Les Menuires.

Biolley 2 gets a new magic carpet in Saint-Martin

Saint-Martin-de-Belleville is also improving its beginner infrastructure.

The Biolley 2 magic carpet in the children’s and beginner area is being replaced with a more modern installation designed to provide easier and smoother access to the learning slope.

Again, this is not a development that changes the wider Les 3 Vallées ski area. Its value is much more targeted: young children and first-time skiers should have a more convenient way to get back up the practice slope while learning.

A new route planner should make Les 3 Vallées easier to navigate

One of the most interesting changes for skiers who want to explore beyond their home resort is digital rather than physical.

A new route planning feature called Itinemap is being introduced within the Les 3 Vallées mobile app.

Skiers can enter where they want to go and receive a suggested route based on their ability, destination and current operating conditions. The recommendations take account of real time piste and lift openings.

That could be particularly useful in a ski area where a day’s skiing can involve crossing several valleys.

Rather than simply finding the geographically shortest route, the system is designed to suggest an itinerary appropriate to the skier and current mountain operations.

That could help when trying to reach a mountain restaurant, meet other members of your group, return to your home resort or explore another valley.

It should also make adapting a planned route easier when a piste or lift is unavailable.

The practical value will ultimately depend on how well the system performs once skiers begin using it, but the objective is useful: reduce the amount of time spent working out how to get from one part of Les 3 Vallées to another.

What’s new in Val Thorens and Orelle?

The 2026/27 developments in Val Thorens and Orelle are more specialised, but there are two worth knowing about.

Val Thorens expands its mountain safety drone system

Val Thorens is installing a second autonomous drone following an initial deployment in the Lac du Lou sector.

The remotely operated system is used to monitor a large, frequently used off-piste area and support resort teams with surveillance, safety and rescue operations.

For most piste skiers, this will not alter a normal day’s skiing.

Its significance is primarily operational: the additional drone gives mountain teams another tool for monitoring more sensitive terrain and supporting their response when required.

It does not remove the inherent risks associated with mountain or off-piste skiing.

A new ski touring route in Orelle

Orelle is also introducing La Trace du Loup, a new ski touring itinerary aimed at intermediate ski tourers.

The route involves approximately 650 metres of ascent and is expected to take around two and a half hours.

It gives visitors who want to spend some time away from conventional lift served skiing another way to explore the Orelle side of Les 3 Vallées.

For most alpine skiers this will remain a secondary addition, but it expands the options for those specifically interested in ski touring.

Les 3 Vallées opening dates for Winter 2026/27

The linked Les 3 Vallées ski area is currently scheduled to operate from 5 December 2026 to 18 April 2027.

Val Thorens and Orelle are due to start considerably earlier, on 21 November 2026, and continue until 2 May 2027.

Courchevel is scheduled to open on 4 December, followed by Méribel, Les Menuires and Brides-les-Bains on 5 December. Saint-Martin-de-Belleville is currently scheduled to open on 12 December.

Opening dates remain subject to operating and snow conditions.

Resort/ski area

Winter 2026/27 opening dates

Val Thorens

21 November 2026 to 2 May 2027

Orelle

21 November 2026 to 2 May 2027

Courchevel

4 December 2026 to 18 April 2027

Méribel

5 December 2026 to 18 April 2027

Les Menuires

5 December 2026 to 18 April 2027

Brides-les-Bains

5 December 2026 to 9 April 2027

Saint-Martin-de-Belleville

12 December 2026 to 18 April 2027

Linked Les 3 Vallées

5 December 2026 to 18 April 2027

There is an important detail if you’re considering Courchevel at either end of the season. Although the overall Courchevel ski area is scheduled from 4 December 2026 to 18 April 2027, Courchevel Village, Moriond and La Tania are scheduled to open on 5 December, while Moriond and La Tania are scheduled to close on 11 April.

Brides-les-Bains opens earlier for 2026/27

Brides-les-Bains has a particularly useful change for early season visitors.

For the first time, it is scheduled to open one week earlier, on 5 December 2026, bringing its opening into line with Méribel and the start of the linked Les 3 Vallées season.

For skiers staying in Brides-les-Bains, the important consequence is access. The Olympe gondola provides the connection towards Méribel, allowing visitors based in Brides to reach the wider ski area from the beginning of the linked season.

What do the changes mean for a Les 3 Vallées ski holiday?

Winter 2026/27 is not about dramatically expanding Les 3 Vallées. The more important theme is improving how the existing ski area works for the people using it.

Returning skiers may notice the difference most clearly.

In La Tania, getting onto the mountain should become more comfortable. In Méribel and Méribel-Mottaret, piste, snowmaking and lift improvements address specific parts of the ski day. In Les Menuires and Saint-Martin, beginners gain improved places to learn and progress.

Itinemap addresses a different challenge altogether: navigating a very large interconnected ski area and adapting a route as mountain conditions change.

None of these developments fundamentally changes the character of Les 3 Vallées or makes one of its resorts suddenly more suitable for every skier.

They do, however, reinforce some of the area’s existing strengths. For beginners and families, there are tangible improvements to learning infrastructure. For returning visitors, several familiar parts of the mountain should work more smoothly. And for skiers who want to explore between valleys, improved navigation could make planning a full day around the ski area easier.

For someone already considering Les 3 Vallées for Winter 2026/27, the changes are therefore less a reason to choose the destination on their own and more an indication of where the ski experience is continuing to improve.

Planning to ski Les 3 Vallées this winter? Explore Skiworld ski holidays and catered chalets in Méribel, Courchevel and Val Thorens for Winter 2026/27.

Winter 2026/27 brings a series of practical changes across Les 3 Vallées, with improvements to lifts, pistes, snowmaking, beginner areas and navigation around the ski area.
