Selecting the right ski resort to go to with your family can sometimes be more complicated than you anticipated. There are always additional considerations to think of than if you were to go on your own. When choosing a family ski holiday some of the main factors that impact selection would include the overall difficulty of the resort, the reputation of the local ski school and also other activities (not including skiing) for the kids.
Engelberg in Switzerland definitely ticks one of those boxes. This resort has loads of activities to do around the skiing. The Starterland and Sliding Park offers snowtubing – an activity which is essentially going down a snow chute in a rubber ring – which is great fun for all ages. Igloo Village is a great place to visit or stay. Very much the Ronseal of destinations – it is an igloo orientated with pods for sleeping and larger areas for the restaurant and bar areas. If you have slightly older kids (or, like me, are one yourself) then the snowXpark will offer a great alternative to skiing with the snowmobiles they have.
La Plagne, France
A beginner’s paradise, La Plagne is a great place for families skiing together for the first time – especially if there are first-time skiers. It’s an ideal destination courtesy of the nursery slopes and renowned ski instructors. As the family progress there is also a wide array of blue and green runs to graduate on to.
In Colorado Park, La Plagne also offers an epic sledging arena with over 1500m for the family to get their teeth into.
This resort may have a reputation of glitz and glamour but despite this Courchevel has multiple elements to it which make it a feasible destination for families. There is a vast choice of ski and snowboard schools to choose from and for smaller children there are also magnetised waistcoats which keeps them safely on the chairlift.
Aspen Snowmass, Colorado USA
This purpose-built resort is an ideal ski resort for families. Most of the accommodation is ski-in/ski-out which is a blessing to all dads familiar with carry three sets of skis in the morning. Many of the runs offer gentle slopes and they also have a highly regarded ski school which has few competitors. Keen to make skiing fun for all ages there is a kid’s race arena and beginner terrain park – great for children that are maybe more adventurous than their ability.
This resort has always been a popular destination for families due to the great central location of their award-winning ski school and nursery. The introduction of Aquariaz, a sub-tropical water park, a few years ago has done nothing but enhance the reputation of Avoriaz as a family ski holiday destination.
