Ski lesson FAQs

I can ski, should I book lessons?

Absolutely! If you’re a beginner the need is obvious but we recommend them to everyone; the more you improve the more the mountain opens up to you. The true joys of skiing only reveal themselves after quite a bit of development. If you are travelling on a school holiday date, we would strongly advise you book early as there are only a limited number of instructors out there! We can help you organise lessons ahead of time so everything is prepared and protected.

How do I tell the difficulty of the slopes?

Every resort is different but your piste map and the signs on the mountain will all be colour coded. In Europe, this typically follows:
  • Green - nursery slope, ideal for learning (usually between 5-10% gradient)
  • Blue - best suited for beginners and intermediates (gradient between 10-25%)
  • Red - intermediate and advanced skiers (steeper gradient of 25-40%)
  • Black - potentially ungroomed, steep and narrow for expert skiers only (gradients of 40% or more - the Swiss Wall in Avoriaz hits an eye-watering 78% gradient!)

Please note, a blue may have a short steep section, or be steep overall but very wide giving you lots of space and time to turn - what is a blue in one resort may be classed as a red in another!

Should I take ski lessons before my holiday?

It can be a great idea to take a few ski lessons prior to your holiday if you're able to at a local dry ski slope or snow dome. You'll master the basics and get used to handling ski equipment which gives you a great start, however it's certainly not essential! You'll learn everything you need to from your ski instructors in resort, and they'll be on hand throughout to ensure you build confidence and control.

Toviere To Chevril Ski Tour – Val D’Isere

Will Moleshead (Skiworld Commercial and Product Department)

"We were told our guide would be showing us part of the mountain not normally accessible – we didn’t realise until the end why this was! After meeting at the bottom of the Olympic bubble at 9am we proceed to make our way to the top of the Tommeuses lift (the midpoint between Val D’isere and Tignes and the top of the Toviere peak). At this point we removed our skis and proceed to trek a precarious pass along the peaks to the couloir we were going to drop in on; a narrow gully only wide enough for a couple of turns. It was a daunting drop into knee deep snow but after clearing the couloir the route opened out into a large powder field where all our group of six all had fresh lines.

During the second half of the tour we descended between tight trees with a picturesque view of the lake in front of us - it was an incredible ski. We finally came to stop at a plateau, right on the lakeside – the only civilisation visible; the road off in the distance on the other side of the water. We couldn’t see a way back to resort apart from a very long hike... that was until our helicopter swooped in and landed next to us to fly us back into Tignes Val Claret for a well-deserved celebratory beer. A great end to an epic day!"

Types of ski lessons

Kids ski school

Putting your kids through ski school is the best way to ensure they learn the basic skills they will need to progress their technique and be happy, confident and safe on the mountain. There are always lots of options in resort, but booking in advance will ensure you can get the tuition you want for your children - be it full or half days - at the price you're comfortable with. No surprises when you get to resort!

Beginner lessons

As exciting as a ski holiday is, learning to ski is something we all have to go through. The prospect may be daunting at first, but with the right tuition you'll be turning nervous snow-ploughs into parallel carves in just a few lessons.

Having lessons as a beginner is just as important as getting the right boots and wearing a helmet. Not only will you learn how to ski, but you'll learn all about how to keep yourself and others safe on the slopes.

Group lessons

Far cheaper than a private tutor, group lessons (with a standard group size of eight) are a great option for those taking a group ski trip or an individual willing to join other likeminded skiers who are all looking to learn and improve together.

Private tuition

Regardless of your skiing ability, private instructors are available to book for half and full day lessons. One-on-one coaching will ensure you make the fastest possible progress, ironing out flaws in your technique and giving noticeable results by the hour. Even if you've been skiing for 15 years, on the slopes, you CAN teach an old dog new tricks!

Ski touring and off-piste guiding

Do you want to push your skiing to the limit? Looking for the next big adventure? Whether it be ski touring or split boarding to the remotest places in the Paradiski from Les Arcs, skiing five resorts in one day on the Tarentaise tour in Val d’Isere or Tignes or a day trip to La Grave (one of Europe’s premier off-piste resorts) from Les Deux Alpes, you can can book the ski guides you need through Skiworld.
